Finished it. & calls -- McClellan has had
another series of great battles at Sharpsburg --
defeating rebels with great slaughter & driving
them out of Maryland -- but we lost Harpers
Ferry for a time. Penn & Maryland are safe
but we have not captured the whole rebel army
as was hoped --

Began Ser. on Provs 11:30

Thurs [September] 18 [1862]

Went to Mrs. Perrys to board -- cleared off
pleasant --

Wed [September] 17 [1862]

Mr H arrives [-] Phila -- thought up a
lecture preparatory deld [delivered?] it few present. called
at Mrs. Perrys. She has moved to W[es]t. Broadway
Sarah is sick --

Tues [September] 16 [1862]

Talked on Sud. with Tim. visited Northrop
at Palladin's office -- called on Faculty of Alumni
Hall -- & took 2:05 train for N.Y, Met Saml Holmes
in cars -- called at Henrys -- all at Paterson except
Ella & J [?] -- took 7. train for P -- staid at Lillys

possibly Cyrus Northrop (1834-1922), a Yale alumnus. In 1862 he was clerk of the Connecticut Senate and in 1863 joined the faculty of his alma mater.

Monday [September] 15 [1861]

Several calls -- cars at 2:19 -- arrived in N Haven at
Mrs Wilcoxs -- Pinneo [?] & Gray there -- pleasant visit --
tea at Dr Duttons & spent eveg -- P & G off with Boat

Dr. W. S. Dutton (1814?-1866) was pastor of the Second Congregational Church (North) in New Haven. His home at 113 College street was a known station on the Underground Railroad. (Horatio T. Strother. Underground Railroad in Connecticut.)

Preached twice & addressed S.S. con in Eveg -- cloudy &
looked like rain

fine but little cooler -- Selected Psalms 12:5 for text --
McClellan has again been placed in command of all
forces about Washington -- Pope has gone out West -- Rebels in
force are in Maryland -- & threaten Cincinnati --
I think we have begun again -- de novo -- I hope this time
with more success tea at Mr Hemingways --
